The presentation will review the elements of managing confined spaces in industrial settings and the frequent challenges faced by property and operations managers in changing old worker habits to fit the more rigorous modern regulatory requirements. Commonly debated aspects will be reviewed in terms of spaces that are often miscategorised and not properly managed as a result. The challenges of ensuring proper rescue and response resources will also be discussed along with some common sense solutions for balancing compliance with day-to-day realities in industrial settings.

Matthew Allen, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Matthew Allen is a Consulting Engineer bringing over 18 years of experience in chemical, materials and environmental engineering. He’s Vice President of Strategic Development for Health, Environmental & Regulatory Services at Intertek. His strengths include chemicals and hazardous materials management; health & safety; environmental emergency planning; spills response and remediation. Matthew has spoken and written on various topics ranging from the management of hazardous material, to risk and liability management of spills and pollution prevention (P2) in industry. Matthew is also a national instructor with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE).
