Hazards & Operations that Require Special OHS Training

The OHS laws impose 2 kinds of safety training requirements. The first is a general requirement that employers provide whatever training workers need to do their jobs safely. The second kind of training requirement applies to specific hazards and kinds of operations, typically those that are particularly dangerous. Thus, for example, OHS laws of all jurisdictions require that workers must receive specific training before they can:

  • Enter a confined space;
  • Handle hazardous products;
  • Perform work involving exposure to fall, noise and/or respiratory hazards;
  • Workplace harassment and violence; and
  • Operate powered mobile equipment and other machinery and equipment.

In addition, employers must provide training on workplace violence and harassment. Here’s an overview of the most common hazards and operations subject to specific training requirements under OHS regulations across Canada. (Note: This chart doesn’t cover specific training requirements based on the individual’s position or personal characteristics, such as training for supervisors, young workers and JHSC members; nor does it cover specific training required for work done only at certain kinds of sites, like mines, health care facilities, diving operations, offshore oil and gas rigs and forest work.
