Guarding Violation Results in Broken Arm & $115,000 Fine

At a plant that manufactures and processes edible oil products, a worker was trying to remove a sticker that was stuck to an inside wall of the elevator housing for a conveyor line used to move packages of product. The elevator housing was unguarded from the top and the worker’s arm and hand got trapped between a ram that pushes the packages into a shipping box and the pack-plate of the elevator housing. He suffered a broken arm. The plant pleaded guilty to a guarding violation and was fined $115,000 [Bunge Canada Holdings 1 ULC, Govt. News Release, Oct. 22, 2013].
