Failure to Properly Clean up Mould Will Cost Company

Extensive mould contamination was discovered at the Dawson City Wastewater Treatment Plant. According to inspection reports, the mould appeared to be caused by standing water and condensation on the plant’s pipes and had spread to over 100 square feet. The WCB ordered a company to clean it up, but the company failed to do the cleanup properly. So the WCB penalized it under Sec. 3.1 of the OHS Act for conducting the cleanup without a proper assessment of worker health, appropriate equipment, safe procedures or the necessary training for mould remediation. The company is appealing the decision, so the amount of the fine wasn’t disclosed [Corix Water Systems, Dec. 2, 2013].
