Failing to Properly Train Worker Costs Manufacturer $55,000

A temporary worker for a manufacturer was applying tape, sticky side out, to a cardboard roll that was rotating on a machine. He put a hand on the roll and it caught on his glove. As a result, his arm was pulled around the roller and broken. The MOL found that the worker hadn’t been given specific information about the hazards of placing a gloved hand on the cardboard roll. The manufacturer pleaded guilty to failing to adequately train the worker and was fined $55,000 [Sealed Air (Canada) CO/CIE, Govt. News Release, Jan. 10, 2012].
