Employer Fined $50,000 after Trailer Falls and Pins Worker

Two workers were changing a trailer’s tires and bogie, the assembly that includes the tires, suspension, brake and axle system that attaches to the trailer box. They’d changed the tires and were working on opposite sides of the trailer to remove the bogie from under the trailer. One of the workers, believing the trailer was still supported on the jack, was partly under the trailer as he tried to free up a stuck pin when the trailer came down and pinned him, causing critical head and facial injuries. His employer pleaded guilty to failing to establish and maintain a safe procedure for changing a bogie on a trailer and was fined $50,000 [Action Trailer Sales Inc., Govt. News Release, May 15, 2014].
