Employer Fined $275,000 for Calgary Stampede Party Fatality

A worker was fatally injured when he was struck on the head by a steel lever as he was operating a calf roping machine set up by his employer to entertain clients during a Calgary Stampede party. The employer was originally acquitted of safety violations but convicted on appeal. That conviction was recently upheld by the Court of Appeal, which just fined the employer $275,000 [XI Technologies Inc., Govt. News Release, Oct. 31, 2013].
