Court Fines Companies & Orders Management to Attend Safety Training

In two different cases, the court fined the companies and ordered supervisors and managers to attend training on OHS responsibilities. In one case, a worker fell about three metres from a roof. He broke his left heel and bones in his right foot, and felt pain in his knees, hips, back and neck. His employer pleaded guilty to a fall protection violation and was fined $12,000 [Les Pˆcherie LeBreton & Fils Ltd., Govt. News Release, June 14, 2016]. In the other case, a worker fell about 3.6 metres from steel housing supported by two overhead cranes. A failure in the rigging chain sling caused the steel housing and worker to fall. He became comatose after sustaining numerous fractures and continues to experience difficulties due to a brain injury. The company pleaded guilty to a fall protection offence and was fined $28,000 [Coastal Metals Ltd., Govt. News Release, June 14, 2016].
