Cookie Maker Fined $60,000 for Guarding Violation

At a cookie maker’s facility, a sanitation worker was cleaning the middle roller of a tower stacking table. After the roller was cleaned, he noticed one dirty spot and wanted to get to it while the conveyor was still running. Holding on to a cleaning cloth, he began to clean the rotating roller when the cloth and his hand were pulled into an in-running nip hazard between the roller and the belt, causing injuries. The MOL’s investigation found that the rollers weren’t guarded as required. The company pleaded guilty and was fined $60,000 [Dare Foods Ltd., Govt. News Release, Dec. 8, 2015].
