Contractor Fined Half a Million for 21-Year-Old Construction Worker’s Death

A Calgary contractor transferred a table cart designed to carry heavy structural loads to a Saskatoon construction site where there was nobody properly trained to use it. The cart collapsed on top of a 21-year-old construction worker fatally crushing his head, neck and chest. In April, the contractor was found guilty of 2 OHS violations, including failure to ensure safe use, handling and transport of trolleys and provide proper training, information and instruction, resulting in a worker’s death. And now the Saskatchewan court has fined the contractor $500,000, or $250,000 per violation [Banff Constructors Ltd., Govt. Press Release, August 11, 2021].
