Constructor Fined $50,000 for Failing to Secure Beams from Moving

Workers at a construction project were dismantling and replacing a steel storage system for a company. The system consisted of sleeper beams laid out on the ground and vertical upright posts welded onto the sleeper beams. When a worker cut loose an upright support, the posts moved and then fell, striking and injuring a worker. He has since returned to full-time duties. The MOL investigation found that the sleeper beams had been inadequately anchored to prevent movement in violation of the Construction Projects Regulation. The company was fined $50,000 for failing, as a constructor, to ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed by the regulation were carried out in the workplace [Welded Tube of Canada Corp., Govt.
