Concrete Company Fined $70,000 for a Materials Moving Violation

A worker working from an extension ladder was wearing fall protection and had attached the lanyard to an “A” frame, which had been set in place by a crane and wasn’t in a fixed position. The crane operator caught the frame in the crane’s chains, causing it to rise and then fall, dragging the worker to the ground. The frame also fell on top of him, causing serious injuries. The concrete company that employed the worker was fined $70,000 for failing to ensure that material or equipment at a project was stored and moved in a manner that didn’t endanger the worker. The trial for the crane operator, who was also charged under the OHS Act, is ongoing [Cap Concrete Structures Ltd., Govt. News Release, May 3, 2012].
