Company Is Penalized $135,000 for Release of Untreated Effluent

A company experienced a power outage that caused an estimated 3,700,000 litres of untreated effluent to be spilled into Northumberland Channel for about 90 minutes. The power outage impacted the outfall pumphouse. As a result, the company was fined $5,000 and ordered to pay $130,000 to the Environmental Damages Fund for violating Sec. 36(3) of the Fisheries Act [Nanaimo Forest Products Ltd., Govt.
