Company Had the Right Safety Policy but Didn’t Make Workers Aware of It

An elevator company had a safety policy banning workers from wearing gloves when working on moving machinery. The problem is that the worker who got his gloved hand ensnared while lubricating an elevator in motion wasn’t aware of the policy. As a result, the company was fined $60,000 for not doing enough to protect a worker’s safety. Moral: Having an OHS policy doesn’t help if workers don’t know about it [Schindler Elevator Corporation, Govt. Press Release, September 8, 2021].
