Company Fined $77,500 for Possession of Endangered Northern Abalone

During three separate visits, fishery officers found a significant quantity of abalone in a retail store, warehouse and concealed storeroom. Subsequent DNA testing confirmed the fish was endangered Northern abalone. Due to serious conservation concerns, all abalone fisheries were closed in BC in 1990. The company pleaded guilty to three violations of the Species at Risk Act and one violation of the Fisheries Act for obstruction of a Fishery Officer.
