Company Fined $125,000 for Pulp and Paper Effluent Violations

An investigation by Environment and Climate Change Canada found that a company had deposited acutely lethal effluent from its water treatment system in water frequented by fish and failed to file the required report on such deposits. It pleaded guilty to two violations of the Pulp and Paper Effluent Regulations under the Fisheries Act. The court fined it $125,000, $112,500 of which will go to the Environmental Damages Fund [Fibrek S.E.N.C., Govt. News Release, Feb. 17, 2017].
