Company Convicted & Fined $70,000 for Entanglement Injury

A worker was performing maintenance on a conveyor belt when his hand and arm were drawn into the running belt. He was able to stop the device and was taken to the hospital. But he suffered serious injuries as a result of the incident. The company was charged with failing to ensure that an in-running nip hazard that may endanger the safety of a worker was equipped with and guarded with a device that prevents access to the pinch point. After a six-day trial, the court convicted the company and fined it $70,000 [Matrix Logistics Services Ltd., Govt. News Release, Feb. 8, 2017].
