Cold-Related Hazards

2023 had record breaking heat, and 2024 has started off with record breaking cold snaps. In fact, there were over 500 reported cases of hypothermia and frostbite from spectators of the Kansas City/Miami football game on January 13^th. The temperature for the wild-card playoff game was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius), and wind gusts up to 27 mph made for a wind chill of minus-27 degrees; making it the 4^th coldest game in NFL history.

Imagine what that was like for the players. Imagine what it was like for the lineman. Now imagine what it was like for the poor kid working the concession stand.

Working in cold weather presents several occupational health and safety (OHS) risks. It’s important for employers and employees to be aware of these risks and take appropriate precautions to avoid:
