Excavation & Trenching

Excavation and trenching involve digging into the ground for construction, repairs, or utility installation. Excavations refer to any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the earth’s surface formed by removing soil. Trenches, specifically, are narrow excavations deeper than they are wide. These activities carry significant risks, including cave-ins, which can lead to burial or suffocation, as soil walls can collapse suddenly. Other hazards involve falls, falling loads or equipment, hazardous atmospheres due to enclosed spaces, and the potential for striking underground utilities. To mitigate these dangers, strict safety protocols such as protective systems, proper shoring, and trench boxes, along with worker training and oversight, are critical for safe excavation and trenching practices.
