Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Procedure

BENEFITS

Employers have a duty to protect workers from not only injuries but also illnesses. Some illnesses are spread due to exposure to blood, such as HIV and hepatitis. Health care workers are obviously at risk of exposure to so-called bloodeborne pathogens but other workers may also be at risk, such as workers trained to provide first aid.

HOW TO USE THE TOOL

Adapt this model exposure control plan for your workplace, Infection Prevention and Control Program and the requirements in your jurisdictions OHS regulations. Use it to protect the workers designated as “first aid attendants” or “first aiders” from exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Ensure that all affected workers and their supervisors are trained on this plan and understand their duties under it.
