Ask The Expert: Do All JHSC Members Need Certification Training in Alberta?

QUESTION

I know that Alberta has scrapped Part 1 JHSC training and now requires only Part 2 training. But does that training have to be completed by all JHSC members or just the co-chairs, as before’

ANSWER

Mandatory certification training still applies only to the JHSC co-chairs (and the health and safety representative for sites with between 5 and 19 workers). The change is part of the new Alberta Conservative government’s policy of cutting red tape, in this case by condensing the required certification training by scrapping Part 1. Requiring all JHSC members, rather than just the co-chairs, to complete Part 2 training would have the exact opposite effect.
