April 21: Smelter Workers Claim Unsafe Working Conditions

The union for workers at an aluminum smelter in Kitimat is circulating a petition, claiming Rio Tinto is putting their health and safety at risk with unacceptable working conditions. For example, contaminants have been found in bathrooms, drinking water facilities and eating areas. In addition, workers are forced to work 12-hour shifts, up to 15 in a row, which contributes to fatigue and increases the risk of injury.
