April 20: Train Derailment Kills Two, Injures Three

A train operated by Western Forest Products derailed in Woss on northern Vancouver Island, killing two workers and injuring three others. The cause of the incident is under investigation by the BC Coroners Service, the Transportation Safety Board and WorkSafeBC. But early reports indicate a backhoe loader, a speeder car and a crew of workers were on the track when the rail cars approached without warning. The area where the incident occurred is a transfer zone where the loaded rail cars pass through before being connected to locomotives and moved to sawmills.
