Amputation of Two Fingers Costs Meat Company $50,000

At a meat-cutting plant, a worker was cleaning a conveyor that was running. His hand was pulled into the equipment. Although there was a partial guard covering the conveyor gears, it wasn’t adequate to prevent access. As a result, the worker lost two fingers. The meat company pleaded guilty to violating Sec. 25 of Regulation 851 and was fined $50,000 [Leavoy Rowe Beef Co. Ltd., Govt. News Release, May 17, 2013].
