$50,000 Fine Imposed on Manufacturer for Worker’s Leg Injuries

Three workers were fabricating a steel floor assembly weighing approximately 1,800 lbs. The framework for the assembly, which was in two halves, was tack-welded together at the center. While a worker was using a crane to lower a cap into a position in the assembly, the two halves collapsed in the center. One of the halves fell on a worker under the assembly, injuring his leg. The manufacturer pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that the assembly was placed in such a way that it didn’t tip, collapse or fall. The court fined it $50,000 [M-Con Products Inc., Govt.
