Hazards & Operations that Require Special Training

The OHS laws in each jurisdiction impose two kinds of safety training requirements. The first is a general requirement that employers provide whatever training workers need to do their jobs safely. The second kind of training requirement applies to specific hazards and kinds of operations, typically those that are particularly dangerous, such as work in confined spaces or with dangerous machinery, equipment or hazardous chemicals. Here’s an overview of the most common hazards and operations subject to specific training requirements under the OHS regulations across Canada. (Note: This chart doesn’t cover specific training requirements based on the individual’s position or personal characteristics, such as training for supervisors, young workers and JHSC members, nor does it cover specific training requirements that apply to particular professions or workplaces, such as firefighters and health care facilities.)
