Worker and Company Convicted of Safety Violations for Crane Incident

A crane operator used a crane to move an incorrectly placed steel panel while a worker stood on a scaffold to guide it. But the crane operator lifted the panel higher than expected, hitting the worker on the scaffold. He fell about four metres into an open stairwell and was seriously injured. The company and crane operator were convicted of several OHS violations, including failing to ensure the scaffold had a guardrail and operating equipment in a manner than endangered another worker. The court fined the company $85,000 and the crane operator $5,000 [Res 2000 Structures Inc. and Tony Cristao, Govt. News Release, July 21, 2010].
