Company Convicted After Mechanic Was Hit on Head by Beam
A mechanic was repairing a shear, a machine used to cut metal sheets. When he was done, workers turned the shear back on and removed the blocks that had prevented the beam holding the top blade of the shear from moving. A ram attached to the beam broke. The beam fell, hitting the mechanic in the head. The company was convicted at trial of a safety violation and fined $80,000 [Dana Canada Corp., Govt. News Release, Jan. 7, 2009].
