NEW BRUNSWICK

Unsafe Van was Probable Cause of Fatal Accident
Members of a high school basketball team were on the way home from an away game when their van skidded on the icy road and hit a truck. Seven players and a teacher were killed. The basketball coach, who was driving the van, wasn’t hurt nor was the truck driver. The police report says that the aging van wouldn’t have passed a safety inspection. Its tires were worn and rear brake hardware was old [The Canadian Press, July 29, 2008].
