A Follow Up on WHMIS Training Requirements

The Insider’s recent two-part series on WHMIS training, (Vol. 4, Issues 8 & 9) explained the different training requirements across Canada for hazardous substances and for “controlled products” under the OHS laws. We also told you about the six categories that determine whether a worker needs hazardous substance training and/or WHMIS training. These categories covered a lot of ground. So to simplify things for you, we’ve pulled the information about the six categories together into a chart that you can use to determine which of your workers, if any, require WHMIS training and, if so, what kind of training they require.

WHMIS/HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE TRAINING CATEGORIES

TYPE OF SUBSTANCE
EXPOSURE
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Controlled product

WHMIS training

Controlled product
Works near or in proximity to
WHMIS training

Controlled product
Doesn’t work with or near
Doesn’t need WHMIS training on specific controlled products but should probably get general WHMIS training

Hazardous substance that’s not a controlled product
Works with
Hazardous substance training

Hazardous substance that’s not a controlled product
Doesn’t work with

MB: hazardous substance training

NB, SK and YT: If worker has some sort of direct contact with or works in close proximity to a hazardous substance so that he is exposed to such a substance, he needs hazardous substance training

Fed, AB, BC, NL, NS, NT, NU, ON, PEI and QC: If worker may be exposed to a hazardous substance or may face the hazards associated with such substances, he needs hazardous substance training

Hazardous substance that’s not a controlled product
Isn’t exposed or in danger of exposure to

MB: If a hazardous substance is present in the workplace, worker needs hazardous substance training

Rest of Canada: Doesn’t need hazardous substance training but should, at a minimum, probably get trained on the hazardous substances he could be exposed to in an emergency and how to minimize the risk of those hazards
