TV Show Tackles Mine Safety

August 13th, 2010
The popular TV show “Leverage” is taking on a topic this Sunday of interest to safety coordinators—mine safety. The series is about a team of high-tech Robin Hoods who scam corrupt people and greedy corporations that have victimized average citizens. The crew, which includes an eccentric thief; a computer hacker; a hard-hitting “retrieval specialist”; and a skilled grifter are led by a former insurance investigator, who’s reformed them. A summary of this week’s episode, which airs on TNT: In the wake of a fatal mine explosion, the mining company is given government money to improve safety measures. But that money doesn’t go into the mines—instead, the company’s CEO uses it to “buy” the Attorney General, who ensures that the company’s appeals of its safety violations go on and on so it doesn’t have to pay the fines. The crew’s goal is to take down both the CEO and the Attorney General – will they succeed? Click here for a sneak preview. I think we should all watch the show on Sunday night (check your local TV listings for the time) and see if its portrayal of safety issues in mines is accurate. We can then compare notes next week. Is it a date?
